The building is designed for future flexibility and all spaces including the 350 seat lecture theatre are designed to be easily converted to alternative teaching or administrative areas. The West End of Fremantle is an important heritage precinct and the new building re-establishes a presence on the site lost when the earlier Pier Hotel was demolished to make way for a carpark in the 1950’s. The increase in people that the new building brings better duplicates the large population the hotel and the formerly adjacent original Fremantle Post Office once generated. The building is designed to be clearly contemporary as well as sympathetic to the existing scale and materials of Fremantle’s largely Victorian and Edwardian West End buildings. The use of limestone walls and vertical windows behind the solar screen are designed to resonate sympathetically with the adjacent buildings in particular the limestone Maritime Museum diagonally opposite. The LED facade lighting helps provide a visual night time focus to this area of the West End and to the Notre Dame Campus.
