Notre Dame University School of Medicine

The recycling of D J Fowlers warehouse building to become NDU School of Medicine required the fitting of academic offices, a 200 seat theatre, teaching wards, a library and tutorial rooms.

Notre Dame University School of Medicine

D & J Fowlers were prominent merchants in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Their office and warehouse building on Henry Street in Fremantle reflected their business success. The original buildings are now owned by the City of Fremantle and prior to Notre Dame University taking over the lease; it was the workshop and showroom for the well-known Fremantle Furniture Factory. Its recycling to become the Notre Dame University School of Medicine required the fitting of academic offices, a large 200 seat lecture theatre, teaching wards, a library, tutorial rooms and efficient circulation containing stairs, lift and milling spaces.

The original Victorian ambience linked to the contemporary teaching spaces produces a special education environment. The recycling was extremely cost efficient, in the order of 60% of a new, equivalent facility. The building is of significant heritage value, which has been conserved and enhanced by the Notre Dame University School of Medicine.
